General education (GE) courses are different from introductory courses for a major and require the teacher and the students to frame the learning experiences in new ways. This change has resulted not only in (a) a curriculum design that includes certain amount credits of general education but also (b) changes to pedagogy, with a focus on helping students achieve integrative learning outcomes and make original contributions to their fields of study through an interdisciplinary approach. Many universities, including MIT, City University of Hong Kong, University of Maryland, University of Southern Carolina, and University of Macau are implementing new, extended curricula that put more focus on general education and interdisciplinary learning. This talk will share examples from some Universities to demonstrate how they pay attention to design interdisciplinary GE courses.
