Abstract | Drawing on planned behavior theory, we develop and test a multilevel model of employee workplace green behavior (WGB) that tends to address following questions: What type of employees are more likely to engage in WGB? When and why do employees engage in WGB? Data of the study are collected from 46 work group and their 310 subordinates working in three Chinese companies. Results of multilevel path analysis suggest that (1) proactive personality is positively related to pro-environment role identity, which in turn leads to employee WGB; (2) supervisor WGB moderates the indirect effect of proactive personality and employee WGB via pro-environment role identity. The indirect effect is stronger when supervisors themselves demonstrate lower level of supervisor WGB. We contribute to contextual and individual factors that shape employee WGB and the findings provide practical implications for managers to enhance their social responsibility and environmental sustainability. |
