AbstractExtrusion limit diagrams can be used to optimize the extrusion process by maximizing the extrusion productivity while maintaining the best metallurgical quality of the extruded products. In this report, flow stress data from hot compression tests were used to develop an extrusion limit diagram for AZ31 magnesium tubes. The extrusion limit diagram shows a wide region available for extruding AZ31 seamless tubes. Actual extrusion trials validated the predicted temperature rise limit curve corresponding to the occurrence of surface cracking during the extrusion process. Magnesium tubes from this alloy were successfully extruded according to the safe regions identified by the extrusion limit diagram determined from simple compression tests.
