Abstract | Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) launched Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) at the commencement of the 21st century. PISA, through its triannual assessment of reading, mathematics, science and other pertinent literacies, seeks to assess the quality and equity of education systems of OECD and partner countries/economies at a time near the completion stage of the basic education around the world today. Participating countries/economies can learn from the successful experiences and exemplary practices of the high-performing, and/or the fast-improving systems. Since PISA2003, Macao has been consistently reported by the PISA consortium as an economy of high-equity amongst participating economies. In PISA 2015, Macao emerged to become one of the five economies the science education of which is not only rated as high-performance, but also high-equity (i.e. HPHE for short). This paper provides explanation from an insider perspective on why Macao is crowned as a HPHE economy. It discusses in what respects and through what means other PISA participating economies can learn from Macao’s successful experiences and exemplary practices. |
