Abstract

Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) (Ajzen, 1991), this study seeks to use Structural Equation Modeling to model the causal influence structure regarding how affective factors affect grade repetition in Macao schools. It is found that TPB is applicable to the grade repetition research area, and the causal influence structure is capable explaining the grade repetition phenomenon of junior secondary students in Macao. Affective factors like students’ anxiety in mathematics, educational expectations, self-efficacy in mathematics, interest in learning mathematics, and instrumental motivation in mathematics all have significant influence on grade repetition of junior secondary students in Macao.
