Abstract | Given the importance of emotion displays in the service sector, we analyze the role of perceived supervisor support in maintaining employees’ proper emotional expressions. Building on the theory of work engagement, we predict that employees’ perceived supervisor support increases emotion displays through work engagement. We further hypothesize that emotional job demands moderates the proposed relationships. Using a sample of 198 full-time employees in Macau, the results of two wave surveys support our hypotheses. We found positive relationship between perceived supervisor support and emotion displays mediated by work engagement. Consistent with our prediction, the relationship between perceived supervisor support and work engagement was stronger under high emotional job demands. Implications for research and practice are discussed. |
