Abstract | Nuosu Yi, a Tibeto-Burman language, employs three different ways to express frequentative events: (1) the first way is to use a preverbal temporal adverb, like the English often or continuously; (2) the second way is to use a postverbal frequentative aspect marker, like the West Greenlandic frequentative suffix -tar; (3) the third way is to let the temporal adverb and the frequentative aspect marker co-occur in the same sentence. This paper proposes a unified account for these three different ways of expressing frequentative events in Nuosu Yi.We argue that there exists a temporal pluractional operator in charge of the frequentative aspect reading. The pluractional operator is able to create unbounded pluralities of event times, hence giving rise to the repetitive/ frequentative reading. Among the three different ways mentioned above, in (1), the pluractional operator is implicit but trigged into effect by the temporal adverb, due to the strong semantic association between the pluractional operator and the temporal adverb. In (2) and (3), the pluractional operator is phonetically realized as the frequentative aspect marker. |
