Examining the relationship between grit and academic achievement within K-12 and higher education: A systematic review

Abstract

In recent years, grit has drawn increasing attention fromboth  researchers  and  practitioners.  As  an  importantnoncognitive indicator, grit has been used to understandindividual success and performance in various fields.However, past empirical research has shown inconsistentfindings on the relationship between grit and academicachievement. This study aims to review and synthesize pastempirical findings on the relationship between grit andacademic achievement. Forty‐four relevant articles involvinga total of 60,133 participants met the inclusion criteria andwere synthesized in this meta‐analysis. Our findings suggestthat (a) overall grit level and its two facets (consistency ofinterest and perseverance of effort) are positively asso-ciated with academic achievement; (b) the associationbetween grit and academic achievement is moderated bygrade level; and (c) perseverance of effort shows the largesteffect size on students’academic achievement whencompared with overall grit level and consistency of interest.
