Abstract

This essay discusses an aspect of the modernization of (Western) philosophy, namely its attempt to redefine itself in terms of "science", or, In German, Wissenschaft. Many European philosophers, most notably Kant and Hegel, aspired to overcome the traditional focus of philosophy on wisdom. The text discusses how philosophy, as academic philosophy indeed became a Wissenschaft and how this change presents a challenge for non-Western philosophical traditions, such as Confucianism.
