Abstract | This paper shows how the story of Hundun’s Death which concludes the Inner Chapters of the Zhuangzi can be read as parody of a cosmogenic myth. The first part recapitulates readings of the story from mythological and “medicinal” as well as from metaphysical and moral perspectives. It is argued that all these interpretations are equally justifiable because of the multi-dimensionality of the text. The second part presents an alternative reading of the story as a parody about three failed sages. It is argued that from this perspective, too, the story addresses “medicinal” issues of sanity and insanity and indirectly commends a Daoist attitude of “genuine pretending.” |
