Abstract | The Zhuangzi is not only quite unique as a philosophical work in ancient China, but also as a literary masterpiece. It contains rather unusual stylistic features such as fables and plays on words (particular with respect to the names of various of its protagonists). Perhaps one of its most uncommon characteristics is the use of wit, humor, and irony. The paper will look at some of the humorous and/or ironic passages in the Zhuangzi and comment on their philosophical “meaning.” |
