AbstractThis introductory chapter provides a general contextual framework of contemporary relations between China and the CEECs. After a brief account of the rapid development of China-CEECs relations in recent years, it focuses on the key issues of China’s motivations and strategies towards the CEECS, in relations to its overall national development and international status. It further discusses the changed horizon in the CEECs and its impacts on the CEECs’ relations with China. The nature of China and the CEECS is then characterized as a partnership of familiar strangers, with both promises and challenges. The chapter is concluded with an introduction of the main structure of the whole volume.
