Abstract | Altogether these pieces provide new insights on both the limits of autotelic criticism and the importance of a presumed, occasionally pre-linguistic lifeworld to the role of the literary critic. Although empirical scholarship, centred around sources and the genesis of texts, has rebounded in recent years, and the essentialist and binarist, ideal structures that divorce literature from context have waned, as yet a criticism which argues more cogently for an understanding of lived experience and real-life events enjoying a polar relation to literary texts has not been promulgated seriously. Consciousness, as opposed to the material economic base of the Marxists, has been treated by all except Gadamer - in somewhat different circumstances - as a Heraclitean stream, which view justifies ignoring the more complex elements of historicity. But the lifeworld as experienced, at whatever time, must be engaged with as cogently as is possible in literary interpretation, for through this act we understand literature’s own symbiotic relation with society, both historical and present. The essays in this volume will hopefully go some way to illustrating how this understanding may be achieved. |
