Abstract | Each somatic cell in the body of an individual contains the same genome with the same genes. However, the genes expressed in different cells can be very different in order to fulfill specific physiological activities. The brain is one of the most complex tissues, having different cell types, and the genes in the brain are expressed most actively in all human tissues. To fully understand brain function, the activity of each gene in brain tissue needs to be studied. One approach to doing this is to identify the direct gene products, the transcripts, expressed in the brain. Serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) has been applied for this purpose. |
