AbstractThe solutions to the disocclusion problems in depth-image-based rendering (DIBR) are usually to estimate the value of disocclusion areas by applying interpolation and extrapolation methods. But most existing approaches can cause visible texture mismatching problems in certain extents. In this paper, a novel gradient direction templates based extrapolation hole-filling method is proposed to solve the disocclusion problems. In order to keep the texture continuity in a specific gradient direction, two gradient direction templates are proposed, which are in horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. Then the object texture features can be estimated by the direction that is approximately perpendicular to the gradient direction. The texture matching is increased by applying the proposed method. The experiment results show that compared with other hole-filling methods, the proposed method can effectively eliminate the visible defects and reduce the computational complexity at the same time.
