| Abstract | The Chinese cognitive mode of ground-reference differs from that of English figure-preference in the competition for word order dominance,in which the strengthened party gains adominant position while its rival is weakened and withdraws from dominance.This competition and accommodation mechanism underlies various kinds of exceptions that deviate from typological rules of word order in Chinese and English. |
