AbstractTo study the translation of a text in actual use is in effect seeking insights which take us beyond translation itself towards the whole relationship between language activity and the socio-cultural context in which the translation is intended to function. Socio-cultural context is an important aspect in the study of language and translation because the three are inextricably linked. This paper introduces our translation teaching at the University of Macau in which two functional models, namely, Katharina Reiss’s text typology model and the model of the discourse analysis model informed by Hallidayan systemic functional linguistics, are employed. It attempts to explore how to apply the functional theories to the practice of English-Chinese translation teaching, and to discuss how the acquisition of competence for text analysis and for translation can be improved through actual translation practice guided by these functional theories. It is hoped that the findings of the research will give some revelations to English-Chinese translation teaching in the greater China areas and beyond.
