AbstractThe concept “paratexts”, which was first proposed by Gérard Genette in 1987, is “about ‘thresholds’,the literary and printerly conventions that mediate between the world of publishing and the world of the text”(Genette 1997: xvii). In recent years, this concept has been applied to Translation Studies by many researchers, and the study focus has been largely shifted from literary works to non-literary ones. Furthermore, the definition of paratextual elements has also been extended to politics, culture and ideology. In this study, five pieces of Chinese-English news and their translations which are in actual use are examined. The research result shows that transeditting is mainly adopted in translating international news, and the traditional translation concepts such as “equivalence” or “faithfulness to the source text” seem to cease to hold any value in news translation, since in the field of international news reporting, translated materials are usually shaped or edited so as to be consumed by the target audience. It is argued that paratextual elements such as social values, readers’ expectations, ideology and nationalism may play important roles in international news translation.
