| Abstract | “Function” is a frequently used term in Translation Studies. However, with quite a few concepts related to “function”, it is sometimes a confusing term as well. The functional concepts that are most frequently used include “functional equivalence” advanced by Nida, “function-oriented translation studies”proposed by Holmes, “functional approaches” based on the Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics and the “functionalist theories” advocated by the German School. This research has traced back the origins and developments of the above mentioned concepts and found out the common features and the differences between these concepts. It is hoped that the findings will provide a clearer picture of the concepts of “function” for researchers and students in the field of Translation Studies. The result of the research shows that the four “function” concepts all emphasize the importance of “context of situation”. On the other hand, except for “function-oriented translation studies”, the other three “function” concepts are all developed from a linguistic background. The study also shows that the four concepts have fundamental difference in their nature. Secondly, although they all stress the importance of context of situation, their perspectives and focuses are different. Thirdly, influenced by traditional linguistics, what “functional equivalence” pursues is “equivalence”; whereas “functional approaches” has broken away from the constraint of equivalence so that it can better describe and explain the translation phenomena; and “functionalist theories” have transcended language and paid more attention to the Skopos of translation. |
