Abstract | A growing amount of research has been devoted to examining the impact of ethical leaders on employee attitudes and behavior and has shown that ethical leaders influence employees through role modeling, creating an ethical and safe work climate, and fostering interpersonal relational exchanges. In this study, we argue that demonstration of altruistic motivation and the steering of their attention toward ethical standards are also crucial means for ethical leaders to influence employees. These means of influence alter employees’ perception of job security and enhance their cognitive engagement. Our analyses of 306 manufacturing employees in China show that ethical leadership affected both of these measurements, and that these relationships also explained why ethical leadership has a significant influence on employees’ voice and exit intentions. We discuss how these findings contribute to the literature on ethical leadership. |
