AbstractThis study examines the relationship between organizational prestige/work unit prestige and organizational identification/work unit identification among professional employees and whether there is some boundary condition for such relationship. Drawing on social identity theory, this paper hypothesizes that professional employees’ perceptions of organizational prestige/work unit prestige are positively related to organizational/work unit identification. Building on self-enhancement theory, this paper hypothesizes that professional status plays a negatively moderating role in the prestige-identification relationship. The paper also hypothesizes that the moderating role of professional status on the relationship between work unit prestige and work unit identification is greater than that between organizational prestige and organizational identification due to the different nature of organizational prestige and work unit prestige. A sample of 386 hospital nurses in central China was used to test the hypotheses. The results supported most of the hypotheses. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
