Abstract[Purpose] Low carbohydrate diets (LCs) seem effective on weight reduction and maintenance, whereas high-intensity interval training (HIIT) protocols, consisting of repeated bursts of vigorous activity interspersed with less active or passive recovery periods, are developed in the past decade as alternative training strategies to the traditional moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) in improving fitness and cardiometabolic health. Combining HIIT intervention to LCs may induce additional benefits on physical and mental health. The aims of the present study were to examine the physiological and psychological responses to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and to moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) during a 4-week LC diet intervention in overweight young women. [Methods] With LCs, fifty-eight overweight young women were randomly assigned to one three groups, including the control group, LC control group (LC-CON), LC and HIIT group (LC-HIIT), or LC and MICT (LC-MICT). Participants consumed a four week LC, whereas LC-HIIT and LC-MICT received extra training 5 d/week (LC-HIIT: 10 sets of 6 s cycling interspersed with 9 s rest, MICT: 30 min continuous cycling at 50–60% VO2peak). Exercise Enjoyment Scale (EES), and Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) scores were collected before and immediately after each training session throughout the study. [Results] After intervention, the three LC groups reduced by more than 2.5 kg of body weight, and the two training groups improved V̇O2peak by ~15%. Of psychological responses to the two training programs, both had comparable pleasurable feelings while MICT was more enjoyable indicated by high scores of PACES. [Conclusion] Short-term LC is a useful approach to improve body composition in overweight young women where combined exercise training has no additional effects on weight loss, but has additional benefits on cardiorespiratory fitness. HIIT with LCs seems to be more arduous despite its time-efficiency.
