Abstract | Both presupposition and entailment refer to the meaning relations between the truth value and the proposition conveyed by the sentence. They are both implications inferred from the meaning of the sentence in itself, whose objective is to make research on the influence made by other factors outside of the sentence. In general, p resuppo sition can be interp reted as the follows: if P is true, Q is true. If P is false, Q is still true. Q is the p resuppo sition of P. Entailm ent can be interp reted as fo llow s: under all circum stances, if P is true, then Q is true. P entails Q. P resuppo sition and entailm ent are related to some particular constituents. To be mo re specific, the attributive, subject and adverbials functions as the p resuppo sition and the predicates the entailment, which corresponds to specific meaning. |
