Abstract | A low-profile wideband cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) under multi-resonant modes is proposed in this paper. It is well-known that dielectric resonator antenna has attracted much attention, while some wideband DRAs suffer from an increase in sizes. In this work, based on the previous dual-mode DRA via loading four shorting pins, an additional block mode is excited around the existing text{TM}_{{01}{delta}} (0 lt delta lt 1) mode and pin mode by properly loading four metal blocks into the DR. After that, the antenna loaded with one, two, three, and four blocks is further studied. Metal blocks inserted into the dielectric resonator can disturb the electric field distribution of the text{TM}_{{01} {delta}} mode, increasing the resonant frequency, and the antenna has a tendency to form a triple-band characteristic. With these improvements, one resonant mode of the DRA and two resonant modes of the shorting pins and blocks are combined with each other so as to improve its impedance bandwidth. After adjusting some parameters of the DRA, the HFSS (High Frequency Structure Simulator) 13 simulated results illustrate that the antenna has gained a low profile of 0.0968lambda_{0} (lambda{0} is the free-space wavelength) and a wide bandwidth (vert S_{11} vert lt -10 ~text{dB}) of about 33.3% (3.78GHz-5.29GHz) without enlarging its diameter. The proposed antenna has also gained a realized peak gain around 4dBi around the working band. Additionally, it keeps stable conical radiation patterns over the operating band. This may provide a new idea for the subsequent design and research of low-profile wideband antennas. |
