AbstractComposite structures with variable cross section are often used in aerospace, automotive, marine, and civil engineering to achieve desired structural performance with minimum material cost. Such structures can be modelled as non-uniform beams and have attracted much research efforts especially in the dynamic analysis. With the increasing application of the functionally graded materials (FGMs) in the last two decades, studies on FGM tapered beams have been received more attention. In this paper, a two-dimensional meshfree boundarydomain integral equation method was developed to analyze the free vibration of the non-uniformed FG beams of which the material properties can vary with the spatial coordinates either in axial or thickness directions. The boundary-domain integral equations can be derived by using the elastostatic fundamental solutions from the governing equation based on the two-dimensional elasticity theory, which is more generally than any other beam theories. Radial integration method was applied to transform the domain integrals due to material inhomogeneity and inertial effects into boundary integrals. Since the present solution methodology is two dimensional, it is more versatile as the material properties is not limited to vary in a particular direction.
