Abstract | This paper summarises a series of recent research activities conducted by the authors and co-workers on the performances of coped beams and tension connections. Coped steel beams are widely used in steel frame structures where identical elevation is required for the flanges of both secondary beams and primary beams to satisfy architectural purposes at member intersections. A series of comprehensive studies have been carried out on local failure behaviour of coped beam connections, where focuses were mainly given to the issues of local web buckling and block shear. For local web buckling, both the single-cope and double-cope cases have been investigated, and possible strengthening strategies were also studied in detail. For block shear failure of coped beams, both bolted and welded connection types have been examined, and relevant design rules have been proposed. Moreover, the influences of various factors, including out-of-plane loading eccentricity and double bolt-line pattern, on the block shear capacity of coped beams have been thoroughly discussed. Apart from the studies on coped beams, the performance of tension connections has also been under investigation. A large number of tests have been conducted, enabling a comprehensive understanding of the shear lag behaviour .... |
