Abstract | The increasing environmental pollution problems and potential risks to human health caused by improper use and exposure of organophosphate compounds have been of considerable interest. It is thus essential to develop sensitive detection and disposal methods for organophosphate compounds. In our study, three nanozyme-based methods have been developed for organophosphates detection, which are respectively UV-vis spectral method, fluorescent assay method based on inner filter effect (IFE), and smartphone-based colorimetric method. Nanozymes are nanomaterials found to exhibit unexpected natural enzyme-like characteristics. Here, nanoceria with remarkable phosphatase mimic activity as nanozyme was synthesized and observed to catalyze the hydrolysis of phosphoryl esters in alkaline environments. The catalytical effect was firstly investigated by selecting para-nitrophenyl phosphate as a model molecule at different conditions, including pH value, incubation temperature, reaction time, and concentration of nanoceria. In addition, the effect was reconfirmed by choosing methyl-paraoxon as substrate. The linearity for methyl-paraoxon was in the range of 0.42−42 μM with the correlation coefficients at 0.9858. The developed technique could also transform organophosphates into para-nitrophenol, which is the important precursor compound for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals (e.g. acetaminophen), synthetic dyes and military. In summary, the proposed techniques not only offer rapid, reliable, and on-site methods for routine detection but also expand potential applications in the disposal of organophosphate residues which may contaminate the environment and ecosystem. |
