Abstract | Purpose: Research suggests that affordances in the home provide essential resources that promote motor skills in young children, and the growth of children’s motor development been considered as a significant aspect of the overall development of children. Fundamental motor skills can affect a child's physical fitness, societal skills, and cognitive development. Children with better motor abilities may participate in activities more actively than children with poorer motor abilities. This study is to investigate the status of the home physical environment and the motor development situation of children in Macau by using AHEMD-T-C and Child Development Scale. Furthermore, to examine the effect of the home physical environment on children’s motor development in Macau and to explore the mediating factors in this relation. Methods: There were 265 participants (Male=122, Female=143) from four nursery schools in Macau aged 26 to 39 months. There were two questionnaires a child motor development scale designed to assess children’s motor development and AHEMD-T-C designed to evaluate the home physical environment of their family, these were completed by their family members. Besides, in-person surveys and telephone surveys were also used in data collection. After that, T-test, Pearson correlations, and One-way ANOVA were used to define the associations among the variables. Results: Children aged from 23 to 39 months in Macau are well developed in motor ability. Boys perform better in gross motor skills while girls perform better in fine motor skills. The overall results indicated a significant association between gross and fine home toys and children’s gross and fine motor development. If the family has a good home physical environment, their children will be well developed in motor ability. Conclusions: The home physical environment has a great effect on children’s development particularly in gross and fine motor development. Thus, parents need to optimize the home physical environment and be a family physical education instructor during their physical playtime. Otherwise, parents not only and pay attention to the children’s motor development but also the development in a different area, which is important to children’s future life. |
