AbstractThe vast area, fragmented linguistic landscape, and diverse terrain makes doing survey research in rural China a challenging enterprise. Through summarizing literature and the authors’ own experience of conducting surveys in rural China, this paper identifies potential difficulties that may arise in every stage of the research process. In addition to access, sampling and instrument design, which are frequently discussed in literature, this paper offers fresh advices for how to establish local contacts and handle potential complications with questionnaire administration that may compromise the quality of data.
