Abstract | Consolidation is an essential property of soil and the dissipation of the water phase is very complex, especially for the unsaturated soil. Geotechnical engineers would encounter the unsaturated soil in most parts of the world and the consolidation process of unsaturated soil is elusive because the water and air phases in the unsaturated soil not only dissipate simultaneously but also affect each other during the course. This study is concerned with the analytical solution of the one-dimensional consolidation theory for the unsaturated soil proposed by Fredlund and Rahardjo (1993), which is well accepted in the field of geotechnical engineering. Some researchers have obtained the analytical solutions by some special mathematical methods. However, their methods involve complex mathematical theory. The method proposed herein is pithiness and avoids cumbersome deduction. Instead of uncoupling the two coupled governing equations, it mixes the variables of water and air phases together to introduce a new variable ϕ. Then the governing equations of ϕ can be solved easily. In this paper, the analytical solution of the consolidation for the unsaturated soil subjected to the ramp loading is firstly obtained. Various distributions of initial water and air pressures are taken into consideration in the case of instantaneous loading. Two different kinds of boundary conditions which define the permeability of water and air phases are studied for different loading patterns. It can be found that the proposed method can deal with many cases appear in the real engineering. |
