AbstractIn light of the alarming consequences of abusive supervision at both individual and organizational level, the past two decades have witnessed a burgeoning interest in understanding why, how, and when this dark-side leadership behavior happens. Based on Bandura’s (1986) social cognitive theory and Weiss and Cropanzano’s (1996) affective events theory (AET), we develop a conceptual model linking managers’ workplace role stressors and abusive supervision through the cognitive path of moral disengagement as well as the affective path of anger and anxiety. Moreover, we postulate the buffering role of supervisor moral identity and emotional intelligence on the study relationships. The present conceptual model sheds new light on the growing body of research on predictors of abusive supervision and provides important theoretical and managerial implications to our current understanding on abusive supervision. Furthermore, we offer several directions for future research.
