AbstractWe in this article have reviewed the derivational mechanism of double object construction proposed by Larson (1988), arguing that VP shell structure and empty or light verb are not essential components of grammatical theory. It is demonstrated that binding and negative polarity phenomena observed can be explained by linear precedence, that one does not have to appeal to c-commanding for an account, and that Larson’s postulation of dative construction is quite ad-hoc. It is then argued his V-Raising approach and his approach to the derivation of double object from dative construction in the model of passivization are also problematic, and that the incomplete mutual transformability is a lexical-semantic issue and cannot be resolved along the line of Larson’s approach. It is finally noted that the VP shell structure hypothesis is artificially designed, which has resulted from a series of theory-inter assumptions and manipulations regarding various versions of the X-Bar schema.
