Abstract | As the lingua franca of the Chinese people across the world, Greater Chinese has been proposed to represent various Mandarin varieties spoken at home and abroad. Given the emerging consensus on taking up a more positive and flexible attitude in language planning, we, for the protection and promotion of linguistic diversity, should reconsider the status quo of dialect characters being neglected in the orthographic standardisation of Chinese. Dialect characters are a necessity for Chinese people who speak dialects and some Mandarin varieties, and also a complement to general characters, thus deserving an equal status in the family of Greater Chinese Characters. A set of criteria consisting of systematicity, stability, and intelligibility can be adopted in judging the reasonability of particular dialect characters. |
