Abstract | ‘Dear Madame Suzanne Valadon…’, writes Maria Vermeer, the daughter of the Baroque painter Johannes Vermeer – this paper takes the form of letter writing from a female/artist to another female artist. Letter writing has been a prevalent genre practiced by many women across cultures. In this letter, however, the writer and the recipient were not friends, no acquaintances, nor did they come from the same country origin sharing the same language. They did not at all live in the same century. Yet, both women shared one same experience: the recipient being the model for many painters in the late nineteenth century Paris, the writer the model for her father painter in the seventeenth century Delft, Dutch. And they both painted, though Vermeer might not have made any signatures in a painting if she ever had created. In the name of enquiring about how a model turned to a painter, the letter writing acts as an attempt to illustrate the women’s practice in art in an era which was not favorable at all to females. They were ‘invisible flâneuse’, a phrase coined by Janet Wolff illustrating the invisibility of women having different experiences from the flâneur, who had the privilege to move about the public arenas of an urban city Paris in the nineteenth-century, freely, and he was a man. This was unaccountable to women. However, women were not at all invisible. Imaginary in nature, this letter writing intersects the personal and the social, theory and fiction, across space and time, tracing the path of the visibility of women in art/history. ‘… I exerted art beyond the boundaries and conventions’, the letter writing ends with a short reply from the bohemia woman painter. Indeed, letter writing could be a practice of sexual difference. |
