Abstract | The present chapter addresses the second critique, regarding the cultural universality of Nonaka’s knowledge creation theory, and of the SECI model in particular, through a qualitative case study of a subsidiary of a Japanese company with a predominantly China-based workforce. Thus far, this critique has been confined to conceptual analysis (Hong, 2012) and lacks empirical support (Andreeva and Ikhilchik 2011; Glisby and Holden 2003). The chapter is structured as follows. First, we briefly review Nonaka’s knowledge creation theory and the associated challenges of cultural contextualization. We then introduce the research methodology and main findings. In the conclusion, we explain the implications for the applicability of the SECI model within a Chinese cultural and institutional context and offer suggestions for future research. |
