Abstract | The study investigates how organizational learning helps firms to stay competitive in today’s economy. It first examines the effects of technological and managerial learning on firm performance. Then it postulates that organizational capabilities mediate the effects of the two learning types and that this mediation is moderated by inter-institutional gaps between the learner and the target firm. Results from a survey of 183 firms show that both technological and managerial learning contribute to firm performance, and organizational capabilities fully mediate the influence of learning on firm performance. The link between technological learning and technological capability is strengthened by value gaps, whereas the link between managerial learning and managerial capability is weakened by core-task and value gaps. These findings provide managerial insights into organizational learning in emerging economies such as China. |
