Abstract | Up until very recently, almost all of the widely used engineering design software tools are monolithic applications. This kind of monolithic system impediments design engineers from working collaboratively with geographical dispersed designers, analysts and manufacturers, who may use diverse data resources, during the product development life cycle. To facilitate the engineering collaboration, this paper presents a Collaborative Engineering Design Space (CedSpace). Based on COM+ technology, CedSpace adopts a 3-tiered Client/Server architecture that can provide not only the engineering design and analysis tools but also the collaborative functionalities that support collaboration among multiple designers over the network. Essential modules of the framework, such as the presentation tier, design management, and collaborative session management are described. Collaborative engineering scenarios that demonstrate the effectiveness of the design and engineering analysis in CedSpace are also discussed. |
