| Abstract | This paper presents the current situation about the teaching of the Portuguese language in Macau, moving from a brief description of the paths covered by this language in the territory since the arrival of Portuguese navigators at the beginning of the 16th century. On account of the linguistic/cultural exchange and the ethnic/social hybridism that characterizes this region, the Portuguese language has already been of great interest as well as faced disturbances, mainly because of the lack of a policy turned specifically to foreign language teaching. Currently, we are passing by a transition phase, where the Portuguese language starts to gain importance once again and, although slowly, to recover its status in society. This fact can make Macau become a great propagation center of the Portuguese language in Asia. |
