Abstract | As a former Portuguese colony and a special administrative region of China, Macao has developed a unique and independent criminal justice system. The overall purpose of the correctional system is to punish criminal behavior while providing treatment to offenders to facilitate rehabilitation and reintegration into the community. Historically, the three branches of the correctional system, which includes Macao Prison, Department of Social Rehabilitation, and Correctional Institution, operated fairly independently from one another. After the transfer of the sovereignty over the territory back to China, however, there has been an elevated level of cooperation among the three institutions for the unified purpose of providing adequate supervision and treatment to adult and juvenile offenders. |
