Abstract

The ecology or language learning environment was seldom discussed in terms of analyzing sources of a University’s historical language ecology.   In order to understand and create a future language ecology, one must understand the formation of the past ecology.  Botha (2013) and Wheeler (2019) studied English language usage and attitudes from students in different places of higher education at different times.  This presentation however will focus on a specific University’s history more broadly and how the language ecology has evolved overtime.  Various sources will be shared to focus on different aspects and participants will learn how to think about and analyze the sources.  The different sources will illustrate the different language situations, for instance why certain sources maybe in “Chinese”, “English”, Portuguese or in multiple languages and the larger social context.  They will consider what maybe “missing” or hidden from the sources, different perspectives and the dominant discourse. These forces played and will continue to play a role in shaping the structure of language interaction.  However, this historically diverse linguistic ecology is currently under threat in the broader Macau area (Moody, 2021).  Perhaps the rise of technology may offer new online spaces.  Finally, participants will think about what can be done to construct and build the next generation ecology.
