Abstract | Based on the Environmental Security Hypothesis (ESH), this study content-analyzed 444 top Cantonese popular songs from 1978 to 2020. The Gini coefficient – which indexes the inequality of income distribution – is associated with the sentiments in Cantopop. During difficult years, popular songs tend to deal with being nostalgic with others, sexually suggestiveness, and the natural environment. Also, major historical events have connections with the sentiments and topics of popular songs in Hong Kong. |
