Abstract

This survey study investigates the association between media trust and the use of media from a variety of ideological spectrums. Results suggest that media trust is associated with ideology, partisanship, political interests, political knowledge, populist beliefs, and institutional trust. Overall media diet diversity is a positive predictor of media trust. Cross-ideological use of media decreases media trust. Both populist beliefs and trust in election officials moderate the connection between cross-ideological media use and media trust.
