Abstract | This chapter introduces the method of “Exemplar Reasoning” and explores its potential for promoting deep mutual understanding between Confucians and Catholics. Drawing on recent scholarship on exemplarism, “Exemplar Reasoning” seeks to promote intercultural understanding by focusing on exemplary persons, rather than on abstract philosophical or religious ideas or on the classical texts of a tradition. Intercultural conversations that follow the method of “Exemplar Reasoning” involve much more than the exchange of accounts of the lives of exemplary figures. Through structured conversation, “Exemplar Reasoning” participants explore the values and commitments that are expressed in the way exemplary figures live, or have lived, their lives. The chapter argues that, because of the importance accorded to exemplary figures, such as sages and saints, within Confucianism and Catholicism, “Exemplar Reasoning” is especially well-suited to the task of reinvigorating the dialogue between Confucians and Catholics. |
