This chapter gives a brief account of (conference) interpreting in Macao, a multilingual and multicultural society in the southern part of China. Beginning with a historical and contextual discussion of translation and interpreting in this area, the review looks at interpreting as a practice and profession in Macau, with a focus on its social, political, and economic role in the local society. This review is then followed by an examination of the current interpreting training available at different Macao higher-learning institutions and the accreditation tests administered in this area. Finally, we highlight the strengths of interpreting research, with an emphasis on the neurocognitive research conducted at the Centre for Studies of Translation, Interpreting, and Cognition (CSTIC) at the University of Macau, the biggest public university in the Macau Special Administrative Region.
