Abstract

Cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel voltage source converter (VSC) topologies have been recently investigated for high-voltage applications. Additionally, more and more multilevel VSCs have been applied in parallel as multi-VSCs for high-current applications. In 2022, the concept of fusion topology was proposed to deal with performance, efficiency, and capacity for parallel multilevel hybrid multiconverters. However, the number of voltage levels of the VSC corresponding to the operating voltage of the hybrid VSC is required to be investigated, which can influence the current sharing among fusion topology converters, efficiency, and capacity. Based on the abovementioned issues, an m-to-1 rating design is proposed to reduce the active inverter capacity and power loss in this article for power quality compensation as an example. The comparative hardware experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed design and fusion multilevel multi-VSC. The results show that multilevel L-CHB-VSC and hybrid LC-VSC have the same current injection ability with about 33% lower loss and more enhanced efficiency than the previous cascaded active multilevel multi-VSCs.
