Abstract

The number of Portuguese speakers in Asia is historically limited. The current presence of Portuguese is reduced to communities of expatriates and immigrants, alongside a few thousand native speakers scattered across the continent. For example, although Portuguese is the official language in Macau and East Timor, there are few native Portuguese speakers in these territories. In addition, there is a large community of Brazilian Portuguese speakers in Japan. Nevertheless, very few studies on the phonological aspects of Portuguese spoken by local natives in Asia can be found, except relating to East Timor and some studies in Japan. Thus, this text summarizes the content of the (sparse) phonological studies on Portuguese in Asia, especially East Timor and Japan, and suggests topics for further research. Portuguese is generally spoken in communities in contact with typologically diverse languages within challenging environments, and these environments also heavily influence the Portuguese language. We conclude that the almost nonexistence of studies on the phonology of Portuguese in Asia stems from the scattered presence of speakers on that continent and a probable lack of interest in the subject among linguists so far.
