Abstract | Controlling different degrees of freedom of light, metasurfaces provide a novel and fascinating platform for direct imaging. In contrast, as a new indirect imaging technique, single-pixel imaging uses a computational approach to reconstruct the object image by correlating the light intensity fluctuations. Both metasurface imaging and single-pixel imaging show great potential in optical encryption. For metasurface imaging, degrees of freedom of light serve as keys in the encryption process. For single-pixel imaging, a series of designed patterns serve as keys to encode and decode a target image. Here, we integrate metasurface-generated images into the single-pixel imaging configuration as its keys (i.e. patterns) and cipher text (i.e. light intensity), respectively. On the basis of combined imaging modalities, novel imaging encryption schemes and their robustness are further proposed and discussed. Simulations and experimental results show that the combined imaging schemes can largely enhance the security of the optical encryption. Our work therefore builds a new bridge between the direct imaging and indirect imaging, and steers metasurfaces and sing-pixel imaging toward concrete applications in optical encryption. |
