Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the status, functions, and features of English in Hong Kong and Macau. These two geographically adjacent societies share an overlapping past as colonial territories of Britain and Portugal, and today both are Special Administrative Regions (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China and home to predominantly Cantonese-speaking communities. In Hong Kong, English enjoys de jure recognition as a co-official language of government, the civil service, and the legal profession, thus approximating, in terms of societal multilingualism, to an Outer Circle context. In Macau, however, English lacks overt recognition as an official language. Both societies have historical and contemporary contacts with Southeast Asia and the development of English in the region.
