Abstract | This paper aims to numerically investigate the local geometric imperfections, strength enhancement and cross-section response of cold-formed (CF) steel elliptical hollow sections (EHS) with steel grades up to 960MPa. In this paper, an advanced finite element (FE) stub column model of CF steel tubes is presented, in which strength enhancement, residual stresses, geometric imperfections resulting from cold-forming are predicted by using a rigorous FE simulation of roll-forming. This FE model was validated against test results. By using this validated FE model, a parametric study on the stub-column response of CF steel EHS was then conducted for a wide range of section sizes and steel grades (up to steel grade of 960MPa). Based on the generated FE data, predictive models for the strength enhancement and local imperfections of CF steel EHS are proposed. The cross-section classification for CF steel EHS were also examined according to the slenderness limits of circular hollow sections (CHS) in the existing design codes. Finally, a new yield slenderness limit for CF steel EHS is proposed. |
