AbstractThe manufacturing process of cold-formed steel sections induces the co-existent residual stresses and strain hardening of the material, which can subsequently affect the structural behaviour of the member. This paper presents the results of research which forms part of a larger study on the theoretical predictions of residual stresses in cold-formed steel square hollow sections, and this research is extended from a previous theoretical study for press-braked steel sections (Quach 2005). The manufacturing process of cold-formed steel square hollow sections is illustrated in Fig. 1. In this paper, an analytical model is presented for residual stresses in cold-formed steel square hollow sections due to various stages of the cold-bending operations from the manufacturing process, in which an analytical solution has been developed for residual stresses due to forming and reforming with Quach’s analytical solution (2005) being incorporated for the stresses due to coiling and uncoiling. In the present study, various stages of the cold-bending operations are modelled as elastic-plastic plane strain pure bending problems with the steel assumed to obey the von Mises yield criterion and the Prandtl-Reuss flow rule. To quantify the strain hardening of the material by cold work, the prediction of equivalent plastic strains is also addressed in this model. The accuracy of the model is demonstrated by comparing its predictions with those from a finite element simulation. A parametric study has also been carried out to investigate the effect of the width-to-thickness ratio of square hollow sections on residual stresses.
